Hitting the Wall
I’ve had a few people lately tell me they feel like they’re not getting better. Well welcome to the wonderful world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, it’s a shit feeling I’ll admit and it still happens to me. You tell me you’re having a bad day or a bad month, I’ve seriously had a bad 24 years of Jiu-Jitsu and I still suck at it. There it is, I’m being brutally honest about it!
Why do I keep coming back? Because I one day I won’t suck at it so much.
Now I’m going to give you some free “Hit the Wall” advice that has helped me in the past. Learn to embrace the suck, it’s basically old school army training, if the situation is bad, you deal with it. Don’t worry, there’s more! I’m throwing in the steak knives, because I care.
Pick a move, get fixated on the one move for 6 to 12 months, don’t do anything else and don’t care if you get tapped, that’s the secret, own it and make it your thing. The other thing you can do is starting in a shit position or even better in a deep submission, yes you will get tapped.
While you’re at training, do the warm up, drills and technique but don’t roll at the end of class, you can actually learn a lot but watching. You can roll with white belts, or new people or find someone you actually enjoy rolling with, seriously be selective who you roll with. I would rather roll with someone I know rather than the new strong guy who squeezes the shit out of your head and does weird shit.
You can work on something your weak at, I’m a big guy, my guard still sucks but over the years I’ve developed an OK butterfly guard. You can work on your strengths, specialise in something...pretty sure everyone has felt my “power hook” game!
You can take notes of your rolls or even better film them. The next one is probably the most important, stop comparing yourself to others, your Jiu-Jitsu will never be perfect, nothing is perfect. If everything was perfect this world would be so fucken boring.
Ever seen an enthusiastic three year old in a Superman cape that thinks they can fly? That’s me! These days I’m a lot bigger, I’m wearing a gi and I still have superpowers.
Yours always
